• Singles and Married couples may adopt from Uganda. Single applicants must adopt a child of the same gender. There are no family size requirements.
• Applicants must be at least 25 years old and 21 years older than the child they plan to adopt. In the case of a married couple, it is sufficient for one spouse to meet these requirements.
• Adoptive parents must demonstrate they have no criminal record, must be in good health and be able to show sufficient income to parent the child.
• Children available are infants, toddlers and children up to 15 years of age. The average age of children seen is around 3 years of age. There are many sibling groups that are waiting for a family.
• Relatively healthy and special needs children are ready for adoption in Uganda. • Uganda has an unusual requirement that an adoptive family must reside in Uganda for 3 years before the adoption is complete. However, many high courts waive this requirement, and grant legal guardianship of a child to the adoptive parent, allowing the full adoption to be completed within the United States. Families are currently spending 4-6 weeks in-country to complete the legal guardianship.
