The new law has passed. Guatemala is currently closed for adoptions to new applicants while awaiting the implementation of procedures required by the Hague.

Families wishing to adopt from Guatemala must fit the following criteria:
  • Married or a single person.

  • 1 parent must be a US citizen.

  • Adoptive parents must be no older than 60 years old.

  • Adoptive parents must be physically and mentally healthy.

  • Adoptive parents must be free of contagious infectious diseases or medical conditions which would prevent you from caring for a child.

  • Adoptive parents must show financial stability.

  • Thorough mental preparation for possible risks and delays involved in inter-country adoption. This is acheived during pre-adoption education and throughout the process. *

  • A recommendation by the social worker who completed your family’s home study in the form of a home study approval.*

  • Understanding and preparation for the possibility of post-adoption adjustment difficulties that the family and/or child may experience.

Persons with a history of substance abuse, mental illness, treatment for mental illness, criminal convictions or arrests, or mental health counceling may be ineligible for international adoption. Please call for further details.
